The Travis County Central Booking Unit is staffed 365 days/year, 20 hours per day (6:00 AM – 2:00 AM), and is open to the public from 7:30 AM – 8:30 PM M-F and 8:00 AM – 8:30 PM Weekends and Holidays.
Travis County Pretrial Services has an excellent overview of the services they provide to people who have been arrested. They interview detainees and that information is used to determine what bail bond Austin court’s may set. Bail is an important part of the pretrial process and is based on a number of factors which are taken into account by the Travis County criminal courts. The biggest part of bail is determining whether one has ties to the community and bail will have a large correlation to whether or not one is a flight risk. An Austin court may decide to set a bail bond if a Judge feels that one might not come back to court otherwise. In such cases Travis County Jail release would require a bail bond be posted.

Who was Freddie Gray?
Freddy Gray was a resident of Maryland. He was 25 years old.
What Happened to Freddie Gray?
Freddie Gray died on April 19, 2015. His death took place a week after he was arrested by the Baltimore Police Department. Freddy Gray was injured in connection with that arrest. A video later surfaced of the incident. A woman is heard in the video, which was filmed at the Gilmore Houses, stating that his “leg [looked] broke.” Police dragged Mr. Gray to a car. His legs never moved forward and he seemed unable to propel himself. His family attorney, William Murphy, Jr. made a statement that the spine of Freddie Gray was 80% severed. The Baltimore Police Department acknowledged mistakes were made in connection with the arrest of Freddie Gray. Mr. Gray was buried on April 27, 2015. Riots broke out in Baltimore on the same day. According to the New York Times, Freddy Gray has become a symbol of Police Brutality.

5 THINGS TO DO BEFORE SURRENDERING FOR ARREST
If the police have contacted you and informed you that you are going to be arrested, there are two ways you can react. You can get upset or you can consider yourself fortunate. The truth is, most people don’t leave their homes thinking they will be arrested at some point during the day. Having that information beforehand can be very helpful. While getting arrested sucks, knowing you are going to get arrested is better than not knowing. You can plan in ways that most people who are arrested can not. Below are five tips that can be helpful given the cards that you have been dealt.
1) GET YOUR AFFAIRS IN ORDER PRIOR TO YOUR ARREST!
One of the worst parts of being put in jail is the fact that you will go MIA. Many people will not know where you are. If you are arrested without warning, you can spend at least a day or two in jail without warning. If you know beforehand, you can work on getting your affairs in order. Call your job and let them know you will be out or away. Arrange for child care. Arrange for your car to be put somewhere safe. Pay any bills or other items that may be due during that time. Basically, you should schedule your affairs in advance as if you are going on a short vacation. Often, when people are arrested, they will be released pending trial or on bail. If you will need to get bailed out, start calling people and making arrangements for bail. In many jurisdictions, making bail arrangements prior to an arraignment can lead to your being released quicker. Also try to get your inmate booking number and give it to your family and friends so that they can find out when you will be going to court. It is also helpful to get the telephone number to the court, police department, and/or booking facility to your family and/or friends. This will save time that will otherwise be spent on inmate search engines and looking for central booking sites for the number to a central booking facility.
2) EAT SOME FOOD BEFORE SURRENDERING…
If you have been charged with a crime and a Police Officer informs you that you have to surrender yourself, the last thing you are going to be worried about is eating. In fact, most people will lose their appetites. This is a serious mistake. Just like the people that push the propaganda about how breakfast is the most important meal of the day, the meal you eat prior to getting arrested will often be quite important. In some cases, you may not have access to food after being arrested for quite some time. In other situations, you may get access to something that others are calling food, but that you would rather not eat. Either way, what you eat before arrest will have a great impact on your jail experience for the first couple of hours or even the first day or two. Avoid spicy foods and/or foods that do not agree with you. If you are getting arrested, it is not the time to go eat spicy Indian food or Mexican food, especially if those items do not agree with you. You know what is worse than having your stomach turning in knots? Having to sit on the toilet with 10 or 20 strangers in an open room while they become increasingly angry about your inability to stop your meal from revisiting you in a holding cell.

3) ARRANGE TO BE ABLE TO USE A PHONE
You can not assume you will have access to a phone. While you may wish to avoid people, sometimes, when you have been arrested, there is a pay phone in a cell. In such cases, it is helpful to have a phone card that allows you to call a 1800 number instead of using coins. Do not assume that there will be a phone. Do not assume that if there is a phone, you will be able to use quarters or other change. Often, the phone is full or broken. Your best way of possibly being able to make calls is to bring some change like a roll of quarters (which may be taken from you) and a prepaid phone card. Also be aware that you may be put under duress because you have a phone card and people may ask you to use it. This can be very uncomfortable and in some cases dangerous. Getting a couple in small denominations is helpful.
4) WEAR COMFORTABLE CLOTHING
This is where knowing you are getting arrested before it happens can really be useful. You may have to sit in your clothing for several days. You also don’t know what you are going to encounter as far as temperature and conditions. You may find yourself in a freezing room in the summer or in a hot room in the winter. You may have to sleep on a floor or hard bench, or spending long periods of time sitting or laying on either. You may want to dress in layers. A top shirt or layer may double as a pillow or ground cloth. Make sure your shoes are comfortable. Also make sure that you look as nice as you can. After all, at some point you will see a Judge who does not know you and will be making serious decisions about your life and freedom. You may want to look the best you can. You will also want to balance that with the fact that you may not see that Judge for a day or two and you will be in the same clothes.
5) SECURE YOUR VALUABLES
Jail is not the time to wear your fancy watch or to show off. Often, the police will take your stuff for safe keeping. If you do have a situation where they take items from you, try to make sure they are vouchered and that you get a receipt. However, the best advice is, leave your valuables at home.
5) FIND AN ATTORNEY
If it is possible and you can afford one, you should hire an attorney before speaking to the police. You have the right to remain silent. It is not just a right, it is a really good idea. Despite your inner voice telling you that you have nothing to hide, you should not speak to anyone unless you have an attorney present. Speak to friends and family and ask for referrals for an attorney. Attorneys who work on other types of matters for you are also a great source of referrals for a criminal attorney. Just because your lawyer is a family lawyer, divorce attorney, immigration lawyer or personal injury lawyer does not mean that he or she does not know a good criminal lawyer! Call people you trust and have them help you find an attorney.

When people are arrested in New York (particularly New York City), they are arrested by the Police (most of the time). So when the NYPD arrests someone, you are not going to find them without going to or calling the police station. Sometimes, they drive around in vans for a while until they are finally processed. When the person is processed and put into the system, sometimes you can find out information about them by calling the arraignment clerk. WEBCRIMS is an amazing site, however, they will not be on WEBCRIMS yet. The best way to think of WEBCRIMS is to think of it as the calendar for the New York Criminal Courts. It contains Supreme Court and Criminal Court cases that are scheduled for a court date in the future. WEBCRIMS is a future appearance system. If a case does not have a future appearance scheduled, it will not usually be on WEBCRIMS.
SO CAN I FIND SOMEONE ARRESTED ON WEBCRIMS?!?!?
Once someone has been arrested in New York, they have to be processed before they can see a Judge. Until that person has a court file and that information is entered into the Court system computer, you will not see them on WEBCRIMS. That means that you may not see someone on the WEBCRIMS website until right before or right after that person is arraigned. Before that person sees a Judge at arraignment, you are not going to see any accurate information about who the District Attorney on a case is, or what bail the court has set in a case. Once the arraignment has happened (or right before) you can see someone’s charges on WEBCRIMS. You can also see someone’s next court date on WEBCRIMS. WEBCRIMS will also show if the court set a bail in a criminal case.
HOW CAN YOU SEARCH FOR CASES ON WEBCRIMS?
Remember, WEBCRIMS only has active CRIMINAL cases (and summonses). If someone was arrested and the charges were dropped or if they took a plea at arraignment and the case is OVER, then you may never see the case on WEBCRIMS, even if the person was arrested and charged with a crime. WEBCRIMS is a system which shows active cases in real time. This is important because a great deal of the criminal cases that get filed in New York are dealt with by plea at arraignment.

IF A CASE IS NOT ON WEBCRIMS, DOES THAT MEAN THE CASE IS CLOSED?
NO! Just because a criminal case is not on WEBCRIMS does not mean it is not a pending or open criminal case. Sometimes cases do not appear because the new court date has not been entered into the system yet. Sometimes a case will not appear on WEBCRIMS because someone missed court and a warrant has been issued. When the Judge issues a warrant, a new court date is not set. This is a good example of a case that is still open and is still pending but does not have a future court date. Such being said, the site is NOT an accurate way to rule out whether someone has an open case. WEBCRIMS shows you if someone has a court date coming up in an open case (most of the time). Another example of cases that are open which might not appear on WEBCRIMS are violations of probation or parole. Sometimes people are on probation and they violate that probation (or parole) and get arrested. In those cases, they can be arrested and remanded and will be held in a jail. The person will not appear in WEBCRIMS in the probation example until the court sets a court date for a hearing. In the parole example, because the hearings are administrative hearings, you may not see the person in WEBCRIMS. Generally, case information is updated quickly on WEBCRIMS (daily), but that is not always the case.

- You can not find cases without a future court date on WEBCRIMS (if a person missed court and now has a warrant and no future court date has been set, the case will not appear on webcrims)
- You can not find a case on WEBCRIMS if a Judge has decided to seal the case
- You can not find a case in which an eligible YOUTHFUL OFFENDER has been arrested and prosecuted on WEBCRIMS
- You can not use WEBCRIMS as an arrest inquiry – Cases don’t appear on WEBCRIMS immediately after someone is arrested
I HAVE A DAT, CAN I FIND MY NEXT COURT DATE ON WEBCRIMS?
NO (most of the time)! You can not use WEBCRIMS to find your next Court Date. This is because when you get a DAT, the NYPD is giving you a ticket with the next court date. The Court will not yet have that information and so they have not yet imputed it into the WEBCRIMS system. That being the case, even though you have a DAT, it will not always appear on WEBCRIMS. Just because you can not find your DAT information on WEBCRIMS does not mean you do not have court or that you do not have an open case. Even if you don’t see your DAT on WEBCRIMS, you still have to go to court on the date of your DAT and/or on the date that any letter from the court tells you to appear.
CAN I FIND MY NEXT CRIMINAL COURT DATE ON WEBCRIMS?
YES! If your case is pending you can find your Criminal Court date using WEBCRIMS. As you can see from the picture below, the WEBCRIMS Appearances menu shows criminal case details including the date and part in which the criminal case is pending. It will also show you past court appearance dates in connection with a particular case. The Appearance menu screen will also show you the outcome of the court appearance and what the bail status is. For instance, it will tell you if the case has been adjourned and if bail has been continued. It may also tell you if a Defendant was remanded and taken into custody by a court.

HOW DO I FIND THE AMOUNT OF SOMEONE’S BAIL?
If someone has been arrested in New York State and has been arraigned by a Judge in a New York State Supreme Court, a New York State District Court or a New York State Criminal Court, you can use the Webcrims system to find out someone’s bail amount. You can use webcrims to find someone’s bail if they have an open court case in the following courts:

Find how much someone’s bail is in New York by going to the webcrims website and looking up the current status of the defendant’s criminal case. You can follow these directions for the process of finding out what the status of someone’s criminal case is and for finding out the amount of someone’s bail or whether the person has a bail in a New York Court:

- Log in as a public User. Enter the CAPTCHA code that you see on the screen to log in.
- Click the option for Find Defendant by Name.
- Enter the Defendant’s Name and Search for his/her case
- Click on the Criminal Case that you are interested in getting information for
- Click Appearances (under case details on the left)
- The amount of the bail should appear in the “outcome/release status” column on the far right side (remember that “released on own recognizance means that the person was released without having to post a bail)

In the Instance below, the initially had a $5,000 bail. You can also see that the bail was not posted. However, at some point in the most recent court appearances, you can see that the person had an ROR status, which means that the court decided that there was no need for a bail.

In Maricopa Superior Court, persons arrested appear in an Initial Appearance Court (IA). This includes new charges warrants, felonies, and misdemeanors. These hearings take place at the
4th Avenue Jail

Hearings are supposed to take place at the IA within 24 hours of arrest. When people are arrested, they are booked into the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) Jail Management System (JMS). The Court docket/calendar is updated in three hour intervals 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Usually a Court docket has 40 people but this number can be increased if necessary. For instance, if there is a high volume of arrests, the docket may contain more than 40 names to ensure that the persons arrested are seen in the target 24 hour period. IA also hears warrants and handles warrant matters.
Not all persons are arrested and appear in IA. Some people get an Initial Appearance Summons. Instead of being arrested and arraigned in IA, these people get an Initial Appearance Summons that will have the time and date they must appear for a hearing. In these situations, on the date of the hearing, the charges are read, a plea is entered (for example: NOT GUILTY) and a decision about whether to assign a lawyer is made (in cases where one can not afford a lawyer). The next Court date is also issued.
To Pay a Bond or Fine:
Bonds and fines may be paid at the Fourth Avenue Jail Bond & Fine room located on the north side of the building. It may take up to 48 hours for an inmate’s release to be processed.
The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office suggests that if you have questions, you may call Sheriff’s Information Management Services (SIMS), at 602-876-0322, prior to paying a bond. You will need the person’s full name, date of birth, and if possible booking number.
Acceptable means of payment are a Cashier’s Check (official check), subject to verification, a U.S. Postal Money Order or a Western Union Money Order, made out to the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office. NO CASH IS ACCEPTED.

The Maricopa County Superior Court Criminal Financial Obligations Unit (CFO) processes payments paid on criminal cases into an automated financial system. Money Orders and Checks are accepted (no cash). Payment must include the defendant’s full name and complete case number.

When Does Someone See A Judge In Suffolk County?
Are you looking for someone arrested in Suffolk County?
Suffolk County is a big place. If you are trying to find a person who was arrested in Suffolk, you may want to call the police station nearest to where in Suffolk County the person was arrested. When a person is arrested in Suffolk County, they are taken to one of the following places:
- A Suffolk County Police Precinct
- A Village Police Department
- An East End Town Police Department
Even if someone is arrested by a Village Police Department, that person will usually be taken to the Suffolk County Police Department (SCPD) for additional processing.

In New York City, people who arrested go from the Police Station to Central Booking. In Suffolk County, there is no Central Booking. However, the person should still be arraigned at the Courthouse within 24 hours of arrest. However, unlike New York City, where there can be a huge backlog of people being processed, a Suffolk County defendant can be processed and arraigned pretty quickly, many times in the same day and within hours. Unlike arraignments in New York City, which go from the morning until 1am, arraignments in Nassau and Suffolk go until 5pm. A person arrested is arraigned in the District Court Arraignment part.
What is an Arraignment?
An arraignment is when someone who has been arrested sees a Judge to enter a plea. At the arraignment the Court will also set a bail. In some cases, no bail is set. In Suffolk County, after someone is arrested, that person is often interviewed by the Department of Probation. The Suffolk County Department of Probation will then make a recommendation regarding the need for a bail to the Court based upon the interview with the person arrested. The person’s lawyer will make what is called a bail argument. Please note that sometimes in Suffolk County, people are arraigned without an attorney representing them.
In Suffolk County, the District Court Arraignments take place seven days a week in Courtroom D-11. Each day, arraignments in Suffolk County start at 9:30.

What is Bail?
Bail is an amount set by a Judge in a case to ensure that a person will come back to court.
Bail Is Set To Prevent Someone From Fleeing….
This is the Definition of BAIL!
Bail is basically a way of ensuring that a person involved in a court case comes back to court and does not run away. Bail is set in different types of cases. The most common type of case is a criminal case. However, bail is not just set in criminal cases. For instance, many immigration cases involve situations where deportation is at issue but no crime is alleged to have been committed. In these cases, a bail might be set by a Judge so that the person that is in the deportation proceeding comes back to court and just does not ignore the case and live life as if nothing is happening.
Why Does A Court Set Bail?
Judges often see situations in which people fail to return to Court. Bail is often necessary to get someone to come back to Court.
How Does A Court Decide Bail?
What Is Bail? Bail Is Something That Is Going To Bring You Back To Court…
Bail is about flight risk… It is going to be whatever a Judge thinks it needs to be to prevent you from getting on the next plane out of the country…
Bail Has One Purpose: to ensure that a person attends all future court dates…
There are a number of factors that a Court will consider when determining what bail should be. Different states use different criterion to set bail. These factors include:
- The kind and degree of control or restriction that is necessary to ensure someone comes to court when required
- The Person’s character
- The Person’s mental condition
- The Person’s reputation and habits
- The Person’s employment
- The Person’s financial resources
- The Person’s family ties to the county or state
- How long the Person has lived in the community
- The Person’s Criminal Record
- The Person’s previous history of appearing in Court (Were warrants issued in prior cases?)
- The weight of the evidence and factors which might made conviction unlikely
- The sentenced which may be imposed
FIGURING OUT WHEN A BAIL MIGHT BE VERY HIGH IS NOT ROCKET SCIENCE
(It is not an exact science either!)
FOR EXAMPLE:
If a Person with a criminal record and warrants is accused of a serious crime in a State they do not live in…
As in, you live down south, but are accused of a murder in New York State…
What is the Bail going to be?
THE BAIL IS PROBABLY GOING TO BE REALLY HIGH….
YOU PAY THE BAIL AND YOU WILL BE “OUT ON BAIL” UNTIL THE CASE IS OVER (THOUGH THE JUDGE CAN REVISIT BAIL AT ANY POINT).
There are no ties to the community, there are previous arrests, there is a warrant history, which means the person has already shown that they don’t return to court and the crime is serious (though the charge itself should not be used alone to determine bail…maybe this is a legal fiction, but that is how it is supposed to work). A Judge is most likely going to set a serious bail in this example.
FOR EXAMPLE:
You were in your house that you lived in for 20 years. You were minding your business and listening to music after a long day’s work. Your neighbor did not like the sound of your music. He came into your apartment through an open door and turned it down. You both had words. He hit you in the face. Your pet roach witnessed the fight and became hostile. It attacked your neighbor and bit him. You then hit him with a stick over and over again until he ran out of the house. He called the police. They arrested you and another neighbor took your pet roach to her house.
WHAT IS BAIL GOING TO BE?
THERE MIGHT NOT EVEN BE A BAIL. You were in your house. You have lived there for 20 years. Your Lawyer will argue that you plan to fight the charges, and that you have a good chance of winning as you were a victim and you were attacked. Your Lawyer will also discuss your employment history, how you have no criminal history and how if not for that brave pet roach, you could have been seriously injured. Further, he will argue that you must care for your roach and that you are responsible for caring for the roach and without you, the roach does not have a chance at a decent life.
IN THIS EXAMPLE YOU WOULD LIKELY BE RELEASED ON YOUR OWN RECOGNIZANCE (ROR). This means you will be released without having to pay a monetary bail. Often there will be conditions that the court will set. They may issue an ORDER OF PROTECTION stating that you have to stay away from your neighbor while the case is pending. This will usually include contact online (so if you are facebook friends, you need to defriend the person and not right back if he tries to talk to you…even if he initiates contact, YOU can go to jail for violating the order of protection). This also usually means no third party contact. That means you can’t have friends trying to talk him into dropping the case. You can go to jail for that too.
IF THE PERSON HAS PASSPORTS, HOUSES OVERSEAS, AND A PLANE….
A COURT MIGHT CONSIDER THOSE RESOURCES AS A RISK FOR FLIGHT AND SET A BAIL…

WHAT ARE BAIL BONDS?
WHAT IS A BAIL BONDSMAN?
There are other things you should know. Like there may be a cash bail and a bond amount set. What is the bond? Sometimes, the bail is high and someone may need to get a bail bond in order to post bail. A bail bond often comes from a bail bondsman. A bail bondsman is someone who posts bail on behalf of an individual. The bail bondsman might take a smaller amount than the actual bail amount in order to post a bond for a higher bail amount. How much is a bail bondsman? Well, that varies. You should ask the different bail bondsman how much you must give them in order for them to post bail for someone. Different bondsman might charge completely different prices. This is no different than any insurance. In fact, it is very similar to some extent. Different insurance companies will assign your risk differently. Different bail bondsman will assign your risk of flight differently and that will be one factor in how much you will have to put up. Other factors like assets are often considered as well. However, each bail bondsman has his or her own criterion and requirements. Many will want to speak to the person periodically (once a week, after court, etc). You should consult a bail bondsman for more information about posting bail using a bail bond.

You can also find a prisoner in Cook County by searching with a Booking Number. If you are going to search for an Inmate using the Booking Number, make sure that you use a hyphen in the Booking Number. For example, 2000–0043394 is a typical booking number format for a Cook County Inmate If you do not use the hyphen, you may not find the person that you are looking for. Employees at the Cook County Jail do not use the Sheriff’s website, but rather, have access to a jail management system program. According to the Sheriff’s site, the visitation policies for visiting inmates in Cook County Jail have recently changed. You should consult the Sheriff’s website for more information or call the Visitor Information Center at 773.674.5225. There is now a background check that must be performed before you can visit an inmate! Children under 17 will not be able to visit an Inmate housed in Cook County.
